Spencer History
The town was named for Samuel Spencer, first president of the Southern Railway, who is credited with establishment of the railroad's mechanical shops in the new town beginning in the 1890s. The former Spencer Shops are now part of the North Carolina Transportation Museum.
Explore exhibits of antique locomotives, rail cars, automobiles and more. Take a train ride around the N.C. Transportation Museum's historic 57-acre site, enjoy our many family-friendly special events, and learn about how transportation progress helped build North Carolina.
