Graduates of North Rowan High School have incorporated the North Rowan High Alumni Association with the state of North Carolina.
Incorporated?
Well, yes.
They're planning a special "grand reunion" of all former North students on Oct. 18, 2008, at the N.C. Transportation Museum, according to John Watkins, vice president of the North Rowan Alumni Association.
The reunion has a three-fold mission: To improve the image of North Rowan High School in the community, to organize events for North Rowan alumni and to provide scholarships for North Rowan High graduates.
A core committee of dedicated former students has selected a board of directors and officers of the association.
Charter officers and their graduating class years are Robin Butler, president, 1970; John Watkins, vice president, 1959; Carol Alley, secretary, 1972.
Watkins lived in Spencer until he graduated from high school, when he went to work in the international shipping business that took him all over the world.
He moved back to Rowan County to make his home in Salisbury in 1990 after he retired as executive vice president of the shipping business.
"I travelled all over the world," he says, and from 1963, he worked on the 39th floor of the World Trade Center.
And he hasn't stopping working yet, but he's changed goals.
Now he's at home.
And he's in a group that has formed an association of local business people who are planning a major reunion of North Rowan alumni.
Butler was student council president in 1970 and now lives in Winston-Salem.
"All the people involved in the association are local business people," he says. "I don't know how many" will come to the reunion, but the planners anticipate at least three to five thousand.
"We've been planning it for a little over a year," he says.
Local restaurants will cater the food, music is being planned, and the event will take place on homecoming weekend, with a football game and festivities on Saturday.
Each officer has a planning committee, he says, "and we're recruiting people for those committees."
Anyone interested should contact Watkins or any of the officers of the organization through the web site, www.nrhscavaliers.com.
